Control Room Services

The Heart of the Asset

Both during construction and operation the control room is the beating heart of the asset, through which all activities are coordinated. To get true value from a control room service a proactive approach to managing the asset is needed. Therefore, our ability to ensure healthy operation of the assets and manage future works is as important as any emergency situation.

ONRG has provided both experienced personnel and trained the client’s team, both in the UK and abroad. Our unique experience of working on multiple systems and processes, combined with our training process PATH, has enabled ONRG to provide real economic value to our clients in controlling their operations. Our control processes primarily cover:

Alarm surveillance, fault response and stakeholder management

The primary role of a control room is to both act in event of an alarm and be the focal point for the stakeholders. It is equally important to be able to react to a system alarm as a request from a national or regional network operator. As such, we spend the time during the initial setup phase to truly understand the response requirements and the needs of our clients. ONRG’s flexible control room processes lead the team and the client through this process to develop the necessary process flows to effectively respond to an event. By focusing on value creation, we utilise the experience of the team to develop pragmatic responses that mitigate false alarms and ensure a proportionate response – for example, being able to distinguish between an alarm that needs an immediate response or can wait for the next working day.

Safety from the System and Network Management

Our control rooms have a pivotal role in the High Voltage (HV) Safety Rules to coordinate work activities and ensure the application of the safe system of work. By a thorough, real-world understanding of HV Safety Rules, both from our clients and our own, we are not only able to manage the implementation of the rules but can advise and optimise their implementation. This ability to adapt in a structured way is essential when the circumstances change.

Asset Performance

Unlike surveillance and network management, which are minimum requirements for a control room, the ability to proactively challenge and look for deviations from normal operation or potential threats to operability is where real value is added. On a continual basis our highly experience control room personnel will monitor the SCADA information, environmental conditions, and future work plans to optimise the performance of the asset.

Customer Experience

For the East Anglia ONE wind farm, ONRG has both trained their operators on the operation and control of high voltage networks and has provided our personnel to support the operation. Additionally, we have trained the complete team of operational controllers at Changfang Xidao windfarm in Taiwan.

It is all about delivering a solution.

“It is all about delivering a solution when an issue occurs. Often the significant experience of the ONRG team is overlooked. Simply because it looks easy! That said, what is clear that during construction and operations is that every fault / significant event was handled with expertise and efficiency keeping the lights on and most importantly the teams safe – great work ONRG team.“
